Arts and Crafts

In some areas, there are Arts and Craft Shows booklets that are available for around $10.00.  If your area does not have this, then check www.craftshows.com  - you may want to put your state in front of the word “craft”.  Go thru the listings to see what shows best fit your business and your schedule.

When contacting the person in charge about the shows you are interested in, always ask a few questions.  Here is a sample of what to ask:

            1.  Do the items we sell have to be hand made?

            2.  If yes to question 1, is this a juried show?  If yes again, make arrangements to show your craft items either by pictures or in person.

            3.  If no to question 1, are we allowed to sell party plan products, i.e. Avon, Candles, Fuller Brush, etc.?  If no, can we put these items in Gift Baskets?

            4.  Do you furnish tables and chairs? If yes, what size?  If not, can we rent them from you and at what cost?

            5.  What size is the space that we will be using to display our items?

            6.  Is electricity available, if needed? If yes, at what cost?

            7.  When can we set up?  If we set up the day before, is security provided?

After deciding to do a show, once you receive a contract, sign it and mail with payment as soon as possible.  Some craft shows sell out fast for space.

Now you need to get ready for the show.

When pricing your items, keep in mind the economy, the time of year and what you and your family would pay for that item. Do not over price but also do not under price.  Sure you want to sell everything, but you still want to make a profit.

Be sure to cover your table or tables, front and side, with either plastic table covers or material. Make your tables look professional.  Dress professionally also.

Be sure to have change with you; a few 10’s, 5’s, plenty of 1’s, plus quarters, dimes and nickels.  Also, pennies if you are charging tax for your items. Some crafters include the tax within the price.  ALWAYS BRING BAGS for purchases!

Be sure to have business cards with you for future orders and/or to contact you for your future shows.  You can print these on your computer for little money.

If you are taking orders for products, always get a 25 – 50% non refundable deposit. This will cover your costs if they decided later they do not want the item or items.

Always have your tables manned at all times. Ask a fellow crafter to watch your table or have a friend go with you.

Make sure all items are priced and after setting up, place your empty containers under the tables, out of the way. Make your space a masterpiece.

If you are selling party plan products, use your old catalogs to give to the customers. Put a sticker on each – “for a current catalog, please contact Name - Phone Number”.  Since catalogs are expensive, I do not give them to children.

Always smile, be friendly and acknowledge all customers.

            Good Luck!
